TUESDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER

Again, circumstances have conspired to minimise the amount of use we have had for this wiki during the Law Unit in Term 3. Hopefully, next term will be more productive!

Today's tasks:

1. I want you to firstly consider - to what degree can the law be too intrusive in our day to day lives? The handout I have supplied you has differing views on parenting and if it is acceptable to smack a child. Should the law be involved to this degree in parenting? You are required to write a response to the material provided clearly arguing your point of view. (I expect more than a two sentence response as this is a very sensitive issue for many people who have polarised opinions)

2. Complete the following reflection on your personal progress and achievements during Term 3 on your Individual Page.

Copy and comment on the following:
a. Are you on-track to achieving your Semester 2 goals in this subject?
b. What do you believe have been the three most important things you have learnt during Term 3?
c. Select a lesson during this term which you thought was the best and explain why you believe it was the best.
d. Are you happy with the Homework habits you have developed and will they greatly assist you next year? Explain
e. In what ways do you always "do your best" in this subject?
f. Do you have "high expectations" in this subject? Explain or justify your answer
g. What extra help do you need from your teacher to help you learn and to improve your skills?
h. Are you happy with your progress and achievement in this subject?
i. How many times have you been recognised on the "Hall of Fame" wiki page and how do you feel about this?
j. My teacher always ....... (complete this statement by writing a brief paragraph)

3. Ensure that you have completed and submitted : a. Two case studies task b. Letter to the Editor task c. Essay task d. Police Website project. If you haven't perhaps now is a good time to work on these assessment tasks.

TUESDAY 17TH AUGUST

Today we will continue completing the unfinished tasks from Wednesday 11th August.

I need you to finish all these Questions today or you must finish them for homework.

WEDNESDAY 11TH AUGUST

It has been a very long time since we used this wiki, so in my absence today, I am going to get you to do a series of tasks to tidy up our Economics Unit of Work (Science Project tasks) and to reflect on aspects of this unit and your own contributions. Once you have finished this, I want you to continue with another online activity which will form part of our Law Unit.

Please complete the following:
1. Go to Voice Your Opinion (9M2) and post your comments to:
  • Integrated Studies - How do you feel?
  • Economics Group Project
  • Me - The Teacher!
  • What have I learnt?

2. Copy the following onto your Individual Student Page and complete by adding reflective comments to each of these questions:
  • What is the most important thing(s) that you have learnt in Me & My World this semester? Justify with reasons.
  • If you were the teacher of this class, what is one immediate change you would make which would be an improvement?
  • How do you measure personal success?
  • Have you been successful in Me & My World this Semester? How do you know this or how do you make this judgement?
  • How much time in this class is profitable (used for learning)? Explain
  • What is one word you would use to describe your class?
  • What are your goals for Semester 2?
  • For each of your goals, review your progress and rate yourself on how well you have achieved each goal (out of "5 stars") explaining the reasons for each rating.
  • How prepared do you feel you are to undertake a VCE subject next year?

3. Create a new page on this wiki (see top left of page - Actions). This needs to be done together with other members of your group. (One page for each group - Don't waste time: if you can't do this task for whatever reason, please move on to Task 4)
  • Name this page according to your product you have produced and marketed.

  • Upload any of the flyers, pamphlets, jingles, videos to this page (use File option on Menu Bar). If you have problems see if anyone can help, but don't panic if you
don't succeed

  • Go to Economics-Business page and create a link to your new page

4. The substitute teacher will give you a Vocabulary handout consisting of 20+ legal terms we will use in the Law Unit. Use the Internet to find the meaning of these terms, hand write a simple definition in your own words and paste this sheet into your workbook. (Task not to be done in Word as I don't want to see cut & paste definitions!)

5. Go to Law and complete the five case studies using the web site given to you. Make sure you select Victoria because we want to see the law applicable to citizens and residents in this State.

Debaters be ready for our next session when I should be back in the classroom.

Good luck and enjoy.

WEDNESDAY 25th MAY

Today will not happen too often.... make the most of it!!!

Due to the large number of absences, excursions etc a number of members in the class are behind in completing the Aboriginal Portfolio tasks. Use today's session to firstly complete your class presentation PowerPoint on your research topic. Once you have completed this task then you should ensure that you have completed the other tasks:
Eastern Kulin, Decoration of Folder, Photostory option, Massacre Map.

Good luck and ensure that you make effective use of class time.

WEDNESDAY 5th MAY

Today I would like to do some reflection and give/receive feedback.

Therefore, please do the following tasks:
1. Go to Voice Your Opinion and respond to the posts.
2. On your Private Page complete the following:
  • Decide on three goals for the remainder of the semester
  • Justify why you chose these goals
  • Explain how you will measure or determine if you have succeeded in meeting these goals

TUESDAY 27th APRIL

Today's task is to do some research on the tribal lifestyle and culture of the Eastern Kulin nation of Aboriginals who lived around Melbourne and the east of Victoria.

Your task sheet has twenty two tasks divided into five main subheadings. Your job is to complete a minimum of EIGHT of these tasks of your choice providing at least ONE is completed from each of the subheadings!

The Eastern Kulin website produced by Monash University is available on the school Intranet: My Computer --> Network Drive Z: --> Kulin --> Kulin.htm

TUESDAY 13th MARCH

Check the file Humanities Wk8.xls in your G: Drives to ensure that all work (especially Work Requirements) is completed and submitted from Term 1.

Today, and for about the next week, we are going to complete the final part of our unit on Convicts. I have added a file to this wiki under the History link called ffdb.xls which is useful to complete some of the tasks on the worksheets, especially as some web site links provided can suddenly cease to exist.

TUESDAY 16th MARCH

Check the file Humanities Wk7.xls in your G: Drive. This will tell you if you have outstanding tasks and are expected to attend Student Support Sessions on Thursday 18th March.

The 'window of opportunity' to complete the online questionnaire has been extended. I will organise small groups to complete this task today. Do not start unless I tell you to!

I have asked some students to upload essays and other written tasks to show the rest of the class what "good work" looks like. Please make an effort to upload these tasks so that I can refer to them in class and use them to help others improve on their written work requirements and general written tasks.

Today, unless you are doing the above, you are required to write another formal work requirement which is another essay. The topic is "Why did the British settle Australia?". This is quite a simple, straight forward essay which should examine each of the three theories we have studied.

WEDNESDAY 10th MARCH

Some members of this class have outstanding tasks to complete on this wiki. Please make an effort to check below (read the instructions carefully) and ensure that you have completed all tasks and are totally up to date.
In your G: drive is an Excel file which clearly indicates all incomplete and outstanding tasks and informs you if you are scheduled to attend Student Support Sessions tomorrow night and are also required to join the lunchtime Chain Gang session tomorrow. Remember, Parent Teacher night is next week!

The priority for Session 1 today is to complete your two work requirements arising from the Tall Ships excursion. Firstly, as a pair you are to submit your completed Photostory project. Secondly, your completed fieldwork booklet is also a work requirement due today!

During Session 2 today we will be commencing out examination of the third theory for British Settlement (Trade Routes Theory).

Use your class time effectively to minimise you homework, get your name off Student Support and free up your lunchtime because you will also be excused from the Chain Gang session!!

WEDNESDAY 24th FEBRUARY

This class is into its fourth week and it is time for you to review and reflect on our progress to date.

Firstly, I want you to go to Voice Your Opinion and post an entry in response to the topic High Expectations. I have 'high expectations' for this class and I want to know what you think this means.

Secondly, I want you to copy the following sentence stems onto your Private Page and complete them with appropriate and thoughtful remarks:

During the past few weeks:
I have learnt about
I most enjoyed the Humanities class on
My attitude has
My behaviour has
My interim report in the subject wilI indicate that I
The hardest task I have had to complete
My workbook is
My greatest strength is
The two areas of my learning that I want to focus on improving are:
1.
2.
I am happy with

Thirdly, I want you to give short answer responses to the following questions on your Private Page:
  • What is the most important thing that you have you learnt in Humanities in the past month?
  • What did you do to help yourself learn?
  • What did you do that made it difficult for you to learn well?
  • Who did you work with? Were these effective (good) working relationships?
  • How is your progress towards meeting your goals for the semester?

WEDNESDAY 17th FEBRUARY

The following list of tasks need to be attempted today:
  • Upload (cut and paste) your 75 word summary of the DUMPING GROUND THEORY (Follow these links to upload your paragraph:
    History -->.Dumping Ground for Prisoners --> )
  • Read the paragraph found at History --> Temporary Prisons and write a brief account (using Word) describing life as a convict on a prison hulk. I will collect this tomorrow!!
  • Go to www.whereis.com and find the directions to get from 855 Plenty Road, Reservoir to Williamstown and in particular Gem Pier. Print off the directions and print off a overhead/aerial view of the site using this site
  • Research the use of hulks as penal colonies in Melbourneusing the keywords: Gellibrand and convict. You might like to take some brief notes about the history of Williamstown and some of the important historical aspects of this area.

WEDNESDAY 10th FEBRUARY

This is our second class session on this wiki and I have set you two tasks:

Task 1 - Go to Voice Your Opinion and click on the Discussion tab. Add a
thoughtful
comment to the "Heads or Tails?" post.

Task 2 - Summarise what you know and understand about Theory 1 - A Dumping Ground for Prisoners in a maximum of 75 words. Your summary should give the reader a clear understand why the British needed to settle in Australia. When you have drafted and edited your summary, paste it on the wiki by following these links:
History -->.Dumping Ground for Prisoners -->

TUESDAY 2nd FEBRUARY

Hello and welcome.

Every session that we do work in a computer room I will write a summary of the task(s) on this page of the wiki.
Even if I am absent (eg coaching a sports team or sick) I will still write-up the work or activities I want you to complete. Remember to check this page if you can't remember what to do.

Today I have set you three tasks and a challenge:

Task 1 - Interview a fellow student in your class and find out 5 things about them. Summarise your findings and create a voki (www.voki.com) on the 9M2 class page which introduces this person to everyone who visits our wiki

Task 2 - On your own private page (no one else is to add or edit this page) I want you to create a voki with 3 goals for this subject for this semester and also tell me what you need to do to achieve each of these goals

Task 3 - Click on the link Voice Your Opinion, and then click on the Discussion Tab at the top of this page. I have posted three topics for you to comment on:
  • because I want to get your feedback and find out your opinions, and
  • I want you to gain some experience at using the Discussion feature on this wiki.

This wiki does not have a Spellchecker. It may be a good idea to write your comments in Word, then spell check them, and correct errors, before cutting and pasting and posting your views on the Discussion Forum.

Challenge: Redo Task 2 above but record your own voice rather than the mechanical/computerised voice provided
